What is dairy allergy? Can I use SOI products if I am dairy allergic?

There are many people who experience an allergic reaction to milk (usually cow's milk) or milk products. Dairy allergies are different from lactose intolerance. A dairy allergy is an extreme sensitivity to the proteins in dairy products, whereas lactose intolerance is caused by a lack of lactase enzyme, which helps the body digest dairy products. Dairy allergies can range from mild indigestion to anaphylaxis, which is life threatening.

All SOI organic products are dairy, lactose and casein free. None of our ingredients are derived from animal products, by-products or derivatives. None of the natural flavors in our products contain animal products. The source of lactic acid and the live cultures in our SOI Cultured Soy come from vegetables.

What is lactose intolerance? Can I use SOI products if I am lactose intolerant?

Also known as lactase deficiency, milk intolerance and dairy product intolerance, lactose intolerance is a disease that results from the absence of lactase enzyme in specific cells of the gastrointestinal tract. The absence of the lactase enzyme creates an inability to break down the milk sugar called lactose. Common symptoms of lactose intolerance begin approximately 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking foods containing lactose. These include, but are not limited to: nausea, cramps, bloating, gas and diarrhea. Lactose intolerance tends to develop over time, but some infants are born with the problem. It can usually be controlled through a lactose-free diet.

SOI’s products are lactose-free.

What are Isoflavones?

Isoflavones is the general term for phytoestrogens, plant chemicals found primarily in soybeans. They can act as antioxidants, carcinogen blockers and tumor suppressors. Quantities of isoflavones vary from year to year due to the fluctuations in the soybean harvest. Isoflavone content can be dependent on seed and soil quality, weather and the other variables that affect the outcome of a harvest.

Currently there is no federal standard for the recommended daily allowance of isoflavones. We believe that the amount of isoflavones found in the normal servings of soy, consumed throughout the day, are an appropriate amount. We do not believe in supplementing the diet with isolated isoflavone supplements. Rather we believe in incorporating whole soy protein as a part of a balanced diet.

Does SOI use genetically modified soybeans?

SOI uses only whole bean soybeans that are certified organic and non-GM. By definition, certified organic soybeans cannot be genetically modified. Look for the biotechnology statement on our packaging, under the list of ingredients: "Soybeans are third-party certified organic by natural food certifiers. This soymilk is made from soybeans that were not genetically engineered."

SOI organic soybeans are grown with traditional plant breeding and farming practices in Illinois. To insure that our soybean stocks are pure, the soybeans are grown in a region isolated from non-organic and genetically modified soybean production. SOI carefully and continuously monitors our soybean growers directly to ensure that the soybeans have not been genetically altered and are of the very best quality.

SOI complies with all U.S. regulatory standards and requirements related to soy product processing, manufacturing and labeling.

SOI believes in giving consumers the opportunity to make informed choices. We will continue to make our products without bio engineered material in order to give everyone a healthy, high quality, tasty alternative that we can all feel good about.
